FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
September 11, 2012

Lexington, Va. –Sigma Nu Fraternity, Inc. has suspended the charter of the Eta Kappa Chapter at San Diego State University. The decision to suspend the charter, made by the Fraternity’s board of directors (the High Council), followed confirmation of violations of the Fraternity’s law, policies and principles as well as violations of the policies of San Diego State University.

The violations included the misuse of alcohol, unauthorized social activities with alcohol and hazing activities that included the use of alcohol in the candidate (pledge) member program.

“Sigma Nu regrets the loss of the Eta Kappa Chapter; however, the Fraternity remains dedicated to the pursuit of its mission to build ethical leaders and thus cannot tolerate misconduct that not only violates our law and principles but also threatens the safety and health of students.” said Executive Director Brad Beacham.

“We are grateful to have a strong partnership with San Diego State University – a partnership that has been 50 years in the making – and we look forward to re-establishing the chapter in the future in a manner that is reflective of our mutual goals. We appreciate the University’s support of this decision and we will continue to work with alumni leaders and University officials toward the restoration of the chapter following the suspension period,” Beacham stated.

The Eta Kappa Chapter at San Diego State University was founded in 1963. Headquartered in Lexington, Va., Sigma Nu Fraternity was founded in 1869 at Virginia Military Institute in Lexington and has 172 active chapters and colonies on college campuses in the United States.
