Also speaking that night will be Kevin O’Connell, former Aztec Quarterback and New England Patriot. We’ll hear from John Duncan, the Director of Delta Upsilon’s Educational Foundation and finally, our former chapter president, Tyler Deary about his experience in Jamaica representing Delta Upsilon’s Global Initiative program.
Program

6:00pm
Kevin O’Connell will speak about the Aztec athletic program and the future of sports at SDSU.
Brother John Duncan will address the surprising success among the San Diego alumni in raising money for undergraduate scholarships. He will speak to the impact our contributions have made locally and will share with us the example we have set for the international fraternity. We’ve included a Bio for Kevin toward the bottom of this page. Please scroll down to view.
Next, Dr. Franklin will speak about the relevancy of fraternities on today’s campus and will address some of the challenges that have specifically faced the San Diego chapter. Brother Franklin is a dynamic and powerful motivational speaker. His presentations are packed with energy and excitement. He will outline some of the cutting edge programs that have made DU one of the most progressive fraternities in the nation. Scroll to the bottom of the page to learn more about Dr. Franklin’s accomplishments.
Having had the opportunity to join a select few to participate in the DU Global Initiative Program, Brother Tyler Deary will talk about his experiences over the summer in Jamaica and the astounding work DU is doing to help those in need.
The cost for the Gala is $65 per person (we’re recommending an additional $60 voluntary contribution). Though this is an association fundraiser, we have specifically selected each speaker to provide you with an exciting and enjoyable evening. Furthermore, if you’ve enjoyed the reunions, wiffle ball tournaments, tailgates, chapter house improvements and all the work we have done in the last several years to make our San Diego alumni association one of the best in the nation, please make it a point to participate in this event. It is important that we replenish our reserves so we can continue hosting events and supporting the chapter. Besides, what better way is there to spend Cinco de Mayo than with a bunch of your bros?

He completed a two month journey to West Africa to research the fathering heritage of African American men. Franklin

About Kevin O’Connell:
Kevin graduated from San Diego State University in December 2007 with a degree in political science. At SDSU, where he was a four-year team captain, he started 21 games, the sixth-most among SDSU quarterbacks, and ranked first in school history in career rushing yards and second in career rushing touchdowns among quarterbacks; in 2007 he led the team in rushing yards. Passing, he ranked tenth in yardage, eighth in attempts, and seventh in completions.
He played in both the 2008 Hula Bowl and the 2008 East-West Shrine Game. He was the Kai team quarterback in the 2008 Hula Bowl, where he led the offense and was one of the Kai team’s only bright spots. He was 11-of-21 for 147 yards, and completed the pass which resulted in the Kai’s only score of the game.
The New England Patriots selected O’Connell with their third pick (94th overall) of the third round of the 2008 NFL Draft, the highest pick the Patriots had used on a quarterback since they drafted Drew Bledsoe first overall in 1993.
Kevin was signed by several other teams before being waived by the San Diego Chargers on August 12, 2012. More about Kevin can be found at the SDSU Aztec website and on Wikipedia. You can also follow what Kevin has been doing lately at the Aztec for Life Website. We are happy to have Kevin here to speak to our organization.
About Tyler Deary:
Tyler Deary is a graduating senior with a major in Business Management and minor in Economics. He’s from Roseville, California, and has been an active brother of Delta Upsilon since Fall of 2009. Throughout his membership at SDSU, Tyler has held numerous positions such as President, Vice President of Finance, Vice President of New Member Education, and Sports Chair. Tyler has been an influential brother to the SDSU chapter and contributed to chapter growth and success. While President for three semesters, he oversaw many changes and improvements to the chapter including the creation and implementation of by-laws, the development of an award winning academic achievement program, the facilitation of a successful $1700 fundraiser for the Global Service Initiative, an introduction of a new chapter website and many other chapter advancements.
With strong leadership skills and influence among his brothers, Tyler was able to receive recognition for both himself and the chapter. Last year Tyler was recognized from San Diego State Interfraternity Council as Chapter President of the Year, and was also honored with the Delta Upsilon International Fraternity Chapter President of the Year Award. Under his leadership, the SDSU Chapter received awards such as Most Improved GPA and Honor Roll within IFC at SDSU, as well as runner up for most improved Delta Upsilon chapter and outstanding scholarship program throughout the entire Greek community two years in a row.
In addition to his involvement with the local chapter, Tyler has had the opportunity to attend six different programs through the International Fraternity. Since his initiation in Fall of 2009, Tyler has been to New Orleans and Chicago for the DU Leadership Institute, Indianapolis twice for the Winter Education Conference, San Francisco for the Regional Leadership Seminar as well as Jamaica for the Global Service Initiative! While in Jamaica for a week with thirteen other DU brothers from throughout the country, Tyler was able to serve the Jamaican community and build the support structure for an additional building that will be completed this summer, allowing seventy-five school children, ages three to six, to continuing attending school. Tyler’s experience in Jamaica and throughout the country for various Delta Upsilon programs has contributed to his character growth and will benefit him throughout his life.
Everything that Tyler has been able to accomplish and experience certainly couldn’t have been done without support from parents, grandparents, brothers/friends and the DU Alumni! The opportunity to attend various leadership trips, being elected to executive positions within the fraternity and serving communities in New Orleans and Jamaica have been incredible moments that greatly contributed to his college experience. Tyler is very thankful for everyone that has impacted his time as an undergraduate brother of Delta Upsilon at SDSU.
