Both the Men’s and Women’s Aztec Basketball Teams Win the Mountain West Conference

SAN DIEGO – The San Diego State men’s basketball team begins the 2010 NCAA Championship on Thursday, March 18, with a first-round game against 15th-ranked Tennessee in Providence, R.I. The Aztecs earned the No. 11 seed, while the Volunteers are the No. 6 seed in the Midwest Region. Game time will be announced later.
The winner of the SDSU-Tennessee game will play the winner of the third-seeded Georgetown and 14th-seeded Ohio on Saturday, March 20.
SDSU (25-8, 11-5 MWC) is making its sixth trip to the NCAA Division I tournament. The Aztecs earned the Mountain West Conference’s automatic NCAA bid by beating UNLV, 55-45, on Saturday night in Las Vegas. The Aztecs’ last NCAA appearance was in 2006.
This will be Steve Fisher’s 10th appearance in the NCAA tournament and third with the Aztecs. Fisher is guidi
ng San Diego State into its fifth straight postseason tournament and the seventh in his 11 years on campus.
Tennessee (25-8, 11-5 SEC) earned its 18th bid to the 2010 NCAA and will face SDSU for the third time in the two schools’ history. The Vols are 2-0 vs. the Aztecs all-time and Thursday’s game will be the first since 1988.
